What Is a Mini-Split HVAC System?

A split unit, or ductless mini-split system, consists of two primary components:

  • An outdoor condenser unit
  • One or more indoor air handlers connected by refrigerant lines

These systems provide heating and cooling without the need for ductwork, making them ideal for older homes, room additions, garages, or spaces where duct installation isn’t practical.

Solar-Powered Mini-Splits

EG4 Hybrid Solar Mini-Split Installation in San Diego

With SDG&E consistently ranking among the highest electricity rates in the nation, a solar-powered mini-split is one of the smartest investments a North County San Diego homeowner can make right now. Williams Mechanical Co is one of the only licensed HVAC contractors in North County installing EG4 hybrid solar mini-splits.

The EG4 is different from every other mini-split on the market. It connects directly to its own solar panels and operates as a completely self-contained system. No inverter. No battery. No energy management system. No grid backfeed. The solar panels power the unit directly — the electricity never touches your SDG&E meter.

When the sun goes down or clouds roll in, the system automatically switches to AC grid power. No interruption. No manual switching.

You don't need an existing solar system or battery bank to get started. Four solar panels and the unit itself is all it takes to run your heating and cooling essentially for free during San Diego's 266+ sunny days per year.

Available in 9K, 12K, and 24K BTU single-zone units and 24K and 36K multizone systems. ENERGY STAR certified. Wi-Fi controlled via the Solar Aircon app. Operates from 14°F to 136°F — built for Fallbrook summers and Temecula cold snaps.

Williams Mechanical Co handles the complete solar mini-split installation from start to finish. We source the panels, wire the DC connection, and install the unit. No inverter or battery required, connects directly to solar panels with no additional equipment. One contractor one call, licensed C10 electrical and C20 HVAC.

Benefits of Solar Split Units:

  • Off-grid capability: Ideal for remote areas or off-grid applications
  • No inverter or battery required: Connects directly to solar panels
  • Lower utility bills: Use solar energy to power heating and cooling
  • Environmentally friendly: Reduce your carbon footprint
  • Wi-Fi controlled: Manage your system remotely via the Solar Aircon app

Mini-Splits FAQ

Common questions about mini-split installation and EG4 solar systems

  • How much does mini-split installation cost in San Diego?

A single-zone mini-split installation in Fallbrook or Temecula typically runs $4,500 parts and labor depending on BTU size, brand, and line set length. Multi-zone systems serving 2–4 rooms run $5,000–$10,000+. EG4 solar mini-split systems add the cost of solar panel wiring but can offset their cost through SDG&E savings over time.

  • What mini-split brands does Williams Mechanical Co install?

We are an authorized installer and repair dealer for Daikin, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, and Samsung. We are also a certified installer for EG4 hybrid solar-powered mini-splits. Each brand has different strengths — call us and we'll recommend the right system for your home, budget, and energy goals.

  • Is Williams Mechanical Co an authorized Mr Cool repair dealer?

Yes, Williams Mechanical Co is an authorized Mr. Cool installer and repair dealer serving Fallbrook, Temecula, and Oceanside. Mr. Cool is known for its DIY friendly design and competitive pricing. We handle professional installation and repairs for the full Mr. Cool lineup.

  • What size mini-split do I need for my room?

A general guideline is about 12,000 BTU per 500 to 600 square feet under typical conditions. However, ceiling height, insulation quality, sun exposure, and local climate all impact proper sizing. Homes in Fallbrook and Temecula with full sun exposure often require 20 to 25 percent more capacity than the basic square footage rule suggests. We account for all variables before recommending any system.

  • Can a mini-split heat and cool my whole home?

Yes. A multi-zone mini-split system can handle whole-home heating and cooling. We install multi-zone systems with up to 4–5 indoor heads connected to one outdoor unit. For larger homes in Temecula or Fallbrook we often combine a multi-zone mini-split with a supplemental system for complete coverage.

  • Do mini-splits work without ductwork?

Yes, that's one of their biggest advantages. Ductless mini-splits require no existing ductwork. They're ideal for older homes, room additions, garages, ADUs, and any space where running ducts isn't practical. Installation typically requires only a small hole through the wall for the refrigerant line set.

  • How does an EG4 solar mini-split work without an inverter?

The EG4 uses a built-in solar MPPT controller that accepts DC power directly from solar panels. No inverter needed to convert DC to AC. The unit runs on DC solar power during the day and switches seamlessly to AC grid power at night. Because it never back-feeds SDG&E, no additional equipment, utility permits for connection, or utility approval is required for the solar connection.

  • How long does mini-split installation take?

A single-zone installation typically takes 8 hours. A multi-zone system serving 2-4 rooms takes 2-3 full days. An EG4 solar mini-split installation including solar panel wiring also takes 2-3 full days. We handle everything in one visit with no subcontractors. We are C10 licensed for all electrical work.

  • Can I see the indoor unit or is it hidden in the wall?

Mini-split indoor heads mount high on the wall and come in sleek, low-profile designs that blend into most interiors. Ceiling cassette options sit flush with the ceiling and are virtually invisible from below. For homeowners who want a completely hidden system, slim ducted air handlers are also available. These units install inside a ceiling or wall cavity and connect to small flex duct runs, delivering conditioned air through standard registers just like a traditional system. No visible equipment anywhere in the room. Williams Mechanical Co installs all three configurations.

  • What refrigerant do your mini-splits use?

All new mini-split systems installed by Williams Mechanical Co use R-32 or R-454B, both low GWP refrigerants required under the EPA as R-410A is phased out. Daikin, which owns Goodman, specifically chose R-32 because they developed and championed it globally. Daikin found that R-32 can reduce refrigerant charge by up to 40% compared to R-410A, while also being more energy efficient and easier to reclaim and recycle. R-410A systems are still serviceable but refrigerant costs are rising as supply tightens. If you have an older R-410A system, we can service it. All new installations use current-generation refrigerants.
